FOREWORD

‘As far back as I can remember war medals and decorations have always
held a peculiar fascination for me . . . I cannot think of any hobby more
intensely interesting or historically instructive than the collection of these
mute testimonials to bravery and endurance.”

C. S. Gifford, The Laurels of War, The Hobby-Rider, October, 1920

Carleton Sprague Gifford, of Boston, Massachusetts, a banker by profession, began
to collect orders, decorations and medals around 1916, after the chance purchase of
two British campaign medals from an estate. He joined the American Numismatic
Association in 1920, became a member of the Royal Numismatic Society, and in the
1920s and 1930s was an active member of one of the oldest and most respected
numismatic organisations in the United States, namely the Boston Numismatic
Society, serving as President in 1924, and again in the years 1926 to 1928.

The collection grew rapidly and within a few years it was considered one of the best
of its kind in private hands in the U.S.A. and, at the time, probably second only to
that of Harold Gillingham of Philadelphia. In 1923 more than 500 pieces from the
collection were the subject of a summer exhibition at the Boston Museum of Fine
Arts entitled ‘“‘History Speaks in Gilt, in Silver, and in Bronze’. The display must
have been an impressive one, and on July 7th, a full page illustrated feature was
devoted to the exhibition in the magazine section of the Boston Evening Transcript.

As can be seen in the pages of this catalogue, C. S. Gifford’s tastes and interests
were not blinkered or narrow. He took, quite naturally, a great deal of interest in the
medals of his own country, including urging a revival of the Purple Heart, and
suggesting that numismatists be consulted on questions of medallic design. However,
due to the rarity of certain United States decorations and medals, the collection does
contain a number of pieces which are marked “Exhibition Purposes Only’’, and these
are noted accordingly in the catalogue.

He obviously had a very keen interest in British orders, decorations and medals,
which form about a third of the present sale. Included in this section are a very fine
Garter Star, by C. F. Hancock, and an early breast star of the Royal Guelphic Order
of Hanover, by Rundell, Bridge and Rundell. There is a good representative
selection of British campaign medals, ranging from the Naval General Service, 1793-
1840, up to the 1914-1918 War; and including H.E.I.C. issues. Regimental, Life
Saving and Long Service awards are also represented. The medal for the defence of
Kelat-I-Ghilzie, to an officer of the 43rd Native Infantry, is probably the rarest piece.

The collection contains some extremely good Imperial German and Imperial
Russian material, and among his most prized items can be numbered the Brazilian

Victory Medal and the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece. His paper on the latter
piece was read before the Boston Numismatic Society, subsequently appearing in the
Numismatist, July 1934.

From the very beginning the aim was to build a collection as representative as
possible of orders, decorations and medals of the world, in all their diversity and
variety. Without an adequate source of supply in his own country, in face of high
import duties, often capriciously applied, and the slower postal services of those
days, it is a tribute to C. S. Gifford’s enthusiasm and resourcefulness that he
succeeded so well in such an ambitious undertaking and, despite all of these
difficulties, maintained a generally high standard of condition throughout the
collection.

We feel sure it would have been Carleton Gifford’s wish that the dispersal of his
collection, with its wide selection of items, will give others the same pleasure, interest
and inspiration, as they obviously gave to him.

It should be noted that the colour illustrations on the cover are all slightly
enlarged.

The now widely used classification of ‘‘Usual repair to suspender”’ could also be
applied to this medal. As so many Abyssinia medals show signs of solder marks could it
be that they have not been repaired, but are as issued? The same minor imperfections
can be found on other campaign medals, and it is doubtful whether they would have
been a cause of concern to the recipients.

specimen striking in silver, of large size, by Charles E.
Barber, 48mm (cf. Julian p.331, LS 14). Practically as struck,
attractively toned.

The size of this is larger than the medal awarded to Horn in gold and sold to the public
in bronze, and as such is unrecorded by Julian. We can offer no explanation, however
Julian’s mention of delay and his comment on “‘strange penny pinching on the size of
the die” may provide a clue.

“The medal for John Horn... is one of the most deserved ever given to an
individual in this country. His record of heroic rescues is so lengthy as to be more
worthy of an army of rescuers than a mere single person”. R. W. Julian, Medals of the
United States Mint, the First Century, 1792-1892.

PRIVATE, POLITICAL, SCHOLASTIC AND OTHER
MEDALS, BADGES AND AWARDS

“401 Massachusetts. An extremely interesting private presentation
medal. Obv. This medal presented by William Austin Esqr.,
commander of the ship Panther, to David Layha, for his
exertions in the preservation of the said Ship with her cargo, in
the gales of 17, 21 & 27 September 1822. Rev. sailing ship to
l., assailed by rough seas, with masts broken and sails
battered, the name Panther on stern, above Capt. David
Layha Died on board Brig Carib from Truxillo to Boston.
July the 8, 1837. Aged 35 Years. Silver, 72mm, all engraved.
A little worn from polishing and handling, pierced and
plugged; the reverse presumably engraved in 1837, or later, as
a form of family record. 1

Purchased 1940 from an officer of the Provident Institution for Savings, Boston;
originally from the estate of Miss Elizabeth Webster, who lodged in his parent’s home
in her later years until her death in 1926. Miss Webster claimed part Portuguese
descent and it was believed by the family that Layha was either her maternal uncle or
great uncle.

The Panther was, almost certainly, one of the many New England ships involved in
the China trade; the trade, although highly profitable, was characterised by long,
arduous voyages and often great personal danger, success largely depending on the
ability and business acumen of the Captain.

Gitford conducted a considerable volume of correspondence in order to discover the
background of this unusual piece. Much was learned concerning William Austin: born
1786, in Taunton, Mass. , he commanded the Grand Turk of Salem in 1815, the Fawn in
1816, and the brig Panther for John Elery in 1820; he retired from the sea in the early
1830’s, becoming warden of the State Prison at Charleston and agent of mills at Lowell
for some years, finally moving to Concordia Parish, La., where he died in 1856.
William Downes Austin, grandson of William Austin, provided the information that
his family possessed a silver service inscribed “Presented to Captain William Austin by
the Boston Marine Columbian and Merchants Insurance Companies in testimony of
their sense of his merit in preserving the ship Panther in the Pacific Ocean 1822”’. And it
would seem highly likely that the silver service and the medal refer to the same event.

However, nothing was discovered concerning Layha or his contribution, at the age
of about twenty, to the salvation of the Panther, and this, together with his later career
and the circumstances of his death aboard the Carib remain a mystery. Even his name
presents a problem; it is not Portuguese, but may be an unusual variant of the Spanish
name Laya, fairly common in South America. Thus Miss Webster’s claim that her
maternal family were Portuguese should be treated with caution and may have been a
harmless snobbish deception to ensure greater social acceptability in respectable
Boston society.

With C. S. Gifford’s correspondence and a framed photograph of a painting of William
Austin in the Peabody Museum, Salem.

Third Party Liability. Every person on Glendining & Co.’s premises at any time shall be deemed
to be there at his or her risk. He or she shall have no claim against Glendining & Co. in respect
of any accident which may occur or injury, damage or loss howsoever caused, save insofar as
the injury, damage or loss shall be caused by the direct negligence of Glendining & Co.
employees.

GENERAL CONDITIONS OF SALE

1. Definitions. In these Conditions Glendining & Co., who act only as auctioneers and agents
for the vendor, are called “the Auctioneers”, and the representative of Glendining & Co.
conducting the auction is called “The Auctioneer”’.

2. General. Whilst Glendining & Co. make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their
catalogue and the description of any lot:

(a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot or lots is
sold by the vendor with all faults, imperfections and errors of descriptions.

(b) Glendining & Co. do not accept responsibility for the authenticity, attribution,
genuineness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot, unless
they have been instructed in writing by the vendor so to certify, and in such case the
Auctioneers do so as agents of the vendor and are not themselves responsible for such
claims.

(c) All statements, whether printed in the catalogue or made orally, as to any of the matters
set out in (b) above are statements of opinion only and are not to be taken as being or
implying any warranties or representations of fact by Glendining & Co., unless they have
been instructed in writing by the vendor so to certify, and in such case the Auctioneers do
so as agents of the vendor and are not themselves responsible for such claims.

(d) Any claim under any Statute must be received in writing by the Auctioneer within ten
days of the day of the sale.

3. The Auction.

(a) The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more
lots or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel
the sale without in any case giving any reason or without previous notice. He may bid on
behalf of the vendor for all goods which are being offered subject to reserve or at the
Auctioneer’s discretion.

(b) The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. If during the auction
the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen, he has absolute discretion to settle it
or to re-offer the lot. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance of
bidding or refuse a bid.

(c) Each lot is put up for sale subject to any reserve price placed by the vendor. Where there
is no reserve price (but not otherwise) the seller has the right to bid either personally or by
any one person (who may be the Auctioneer).

(d) All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogue and
elsewhere concerning any lot are subject to any statements modifying or affecting the
same made by the Auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the
lot.

4. Rescission. Notwithstanding any other terms of these Conditions, if within fourteen days
after the sale Glendining & Co. have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that
in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within twenty-one days after such notification
the buyer returns the same to Glendining & Co. in the same condition as at the time of sale
and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies Glendining &
Co. that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery,
then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. Both
the buyer and the vendor agree to be bound by the decision of Glendining & Co.

5. Default. Glendining & Co. disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the
vendor because they act as agents for the vendor only and therefore do not pay out to the
vendor until payment is received from the buyer. Instructions given by telephone are
accepted at the sender’s risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith.

6. In the event of a sale by private treaty both the vendor and the buyer agree to be bound by
the General and any Special Conditions of Sale.

VENDORS CONDITIONS

7. Instructions. As Glendining & Co. are auctioneers, all goods delivered to Glendining &
Co.’s premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction unless otherwise previously
stated in writing and will be catalogued and sold at Glendining & Co.’s discretion and
accepted by Glendining & Co. subject to all the Sale Conditions. By delivering the goods to
Glendining & Co. for inclusion in their auction sales each vendor acknowledges that he or
she has accepted and agreed to be bound by all these Conditions.

13.

- Collections. Glendining & Co. do not themselves usually undertake the collection of goods

but will, if required in writing, instruct a contractor on the vendor’s behalf in their capacity
as agents. Glendining & Co. disclaim all responsibility for loss or damage to goods or for
unauthorised removal of goods and for damage to premises caused by the contractor who
should be insured for such risks. Unless instructions are received to the contrary the charge
for these services will be deducted from the proceeds of sale.

. Loss or Damage. Glendining & Co. disclaim all responsibility for loss or damage to goods

or for unauthorised removal of goods unless caused by the direct negligence of their
employees.

. Storage. Glendining & Co. reserve the right to store or arrange for the storage of goods

delivered to them for sale either on their own premises or elsewhere at their sole discretion.
They exempt themselves from any liability for loss or damage to goods delivered to their sale
rooms without sufficient sale instructions and reserve the right to make a minimum storage
charge at 25p per lot per day for such goods (unless the loss or damage is caused by the
negligence of their employees).

. Right to Sell. Vendors will be charged for goods left on the premises if the vendor has been

requested to remove them and if the goods are not removed within twenty-one days of such
request Glendining & Co. reserve the fight to sell the goods to defray costs and storage
charges.

. Insurance.

(a) Unless otherwise instructed in writing all goods on Glendining & Co.’s premises and in
their custody will be held insured against the risks of fire, theft following forcible entry
and water damage (but not against accidental breakage or damage) for which insurance
Glendining & Co. will charge a premium of £1 per £100 (minimum £1). The value of the
goods so covered shall be the gross amount realised, or in the case of unsold lots the best
bid, or in the case of goods withdrawn prior to a sale that which the specialised staff of
Glendining & Co. shall in their absolute discretion estimate to be the auction value of
such goods.

(b) Glendining & Co. shall not be responsible for damage to or the loss, theft or destruction
of any goods not so insured upon the owner’s written instructions.

(c) Glendining & Co. shall not be responsible for accidental breakage, loss or damage how-
soever caused unless directly caused by negligence of their employees.

(d) In respect of any article delivered to Glendining & Co. if the vendor has in force a policy
or policies of insurance in which the article is specifically mentioned as being insured,
whether or not for an agreed sum or value, the vendor shall notify his insurers of and
shall himself note Glendining & Co.’s interest as bailees in such policy or policies.

Reserves.

(a) All goods are put up for sale WITHOUT RESERVE at the Auctioneer’s discretion
unless written instructions as to reserves are received by one hour prior to the com-
mencement of the sale.

(b) In the event of any reserve price not being reached at auction Glendining & Co. are
empowered to sell after the auction, by private treaty, at not less than the reserve price,
as long as the goods remain on Glendining & Co.’s premises. In the event of such a sale
by private treaty the Conditions of Sale applicable to a buyer governing the auction will

apply.

. Indemnity. The vendor shall duly indemnify Glendining & Co. against any claims in con-

nection with any goods sold by Glendining & Co. on the vendor’s behalf.

. Value Added Tax. A vendor who sends for sale by auction any chattel(s) which is an asset

of his business must disclose to the Auctioneer whether or not he is a registered person for
Value Added Tax purposes and, if so, his registered number and whether or not he intends
to operate the special scheme covering works of art, etc. This information must be supplied
to the Auctioneer on or prior to delivery of the goods.

. The vendor authorises the Auctioneer to deduct commission and expenses at the stated rates

from the hammer price and acknowledges the Auctioneer’s right to retain any premium
payable by the purchaser.

. Rights to Photographs and Illustrations. The vendor gives Glendining & Co. full and

absolute right to photograph and illustrate any lot placed in its hands for sale and to use
such photographs and illustrations and any photographs provided by the vendor at any time
at its absolute discretion (whether or not in connection with the auction).

BUYERS CONDITIONS

18. Inspection. Each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied
himself fully before bidding by inspection or otherwise as to all the Sale Conditions the
physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot
is damaged or has been repaired or restored.

19. Property and Risk. Legal title will not pass to the buyer until the lot(s) has been paid for in
full and the Auctioneers shall be entitled to a lien on any lot sold until the purchase price (as
defined in 23 below) is paid in full but each lot is at the sole risk of the buyer from the fall of
the hammer. Each buyer shall forthwith give his full names and permanent address and if
called upon to do so by the Auctioneer shall forthwith pay to Glendining & Co. such
proportion of the purchase price as the Auctioneer may require. If the buyer fails to do so,
the lot may at the Auctioneer’s sole discretion be put up again and re-sold.

20. Every bidder shall be deemed to act as principal unless there is in force a written
acknowledgement by Glendining & Co. that he acts as agent on behalf of a named principal.

21. Removal of Goods.

(a) No purchase shall be claimed or removed until it has been paid for and the sale has been
concluded. All purchases shall be paid for and removed at the buyer’s risk and expense
by the end of the second working day after the sale, failing which the Auctioneer shall not
be responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, and all lots not so
removed shall remain at the risk of the buyer and subject to a minimum warehousing
charge of 25p per lot per day. If they are not paid for and removed within seven days of
the sale the Auctioneer may re-sell them by auction or privately without notice to the
buyer. Any liability which there may be on the part of the Auctioneer in respect of any
loss shall be restricted to a maximum of the price paid by the buyer of the lot.

(b) In the event of any failure of the buyers to comply with any of the above conditions the
damages recoverable by the seller or the Auctioneers from the defaulter shall include any
loss arising on any re-sale of the lot, together with the charges and expenses in respect of
both sales, and together with interest at 2% above Midland Bank PLC Base Rate upon
the price of any lot which has not been paid for within 48 hours of the sale, and any
money deposited in part payment shall be held by the Auctioneers on account of any
liability of the defaulter to them or to the seller. The Auctioneers are unable to accept
payment from successful bidders other than in cash or by the bidder’s own cheque.
Cheques drawn by third parties, whether in the Auctioneers’ favour or requiring endorse-
ment, cannot be accepted.

22. Value Added Tax. The Buyer will be liable to pay V.A.T. at the standard rate on the
hammer price on those Lots indicated with a dagger (T) after the Lot number. This V.A.T. is
refundable on proof of export by Overseas Buyers within 28 days of Sale.

23. Purchase Price. The purchaser shall pay the hammer price together with a premium of
10% of the hammer price. The premium is NOT negotiable and attracts V.A.T. at the
standard rate and is payable by ALL purchasers. The vendor authorises the Auctioneer to
deduct commission and expenses at the stated rates from the hammer price and
acknowledges the Auctioneer’s right to retain the premium payable by the purchaser.

mences, and should be entered on the forms provided. Bids left by telephone will be accepted

SALE CATALOGUES

On the average we issue twelve or more Coin Catalogues and
three Naval & Military Medal Catalogues each year, some of
which are usually of Sales of important Collections.

CATALOGUE SUBSCRIPTIONS

Sale Catalogues, frequently illustrated, are normaily posted to
Subscribers about three weeks prior to the date of Sale.

Lists of “Prices Bid” are issued after each Sale, thus giving at a
glance a reliable guide to value. The final test of value must
always be auction prices rather than the figures given in books
of reference, for changing times and fashions soon render the
latter obsolete and misleading. The Lists of “Prices Bid” will
probably be enclosed in a following Sale Catalogue.

AIR MAIL POSTAGE
To allow subscribers resident outside Europe time to submit
Postal Bids, Sale Catalogues will, if desired, be sent by Air
Mail. Air Mail postage is not, however, included in the Sub-

scription Rate and the cost must be borne by the Subscriber.
In such cases a deposit against the cost is required.
